Can Dogs Eat Old or Expired Chicken?

Dogs have stronger stomachs than humans and can handle bacteria that would make us sick — but that doesn’t mean anything goes. When it comes to old, expired or off chicken, the answer depends on how old it is, how it was stored, and whether it was cooked. Here’s what you need to know.

Can Dogs Eat Old or Expired Chicken

Can Dogs Eat Old Cooked Chicken?

Cooked chicken that has been refrigerated for up to 3–4 days is generally safe for dogs. If it has been in the fridge for longer, such as a full week, you should toss it. Look for visible mold in any color — discard immediately if present. Also check for a sour or off smell, and a slimy texture on the surface. If the chicken passes all three checks, most dogs will handle it fine. If anything seems questionable, throw it out. Saving a few dollars of chicken is not worth a vet visit.

Can Dogs Eat Off Chicken?

“Off” chicken — chicken that smells bad, has a grayish color, or feels slimy — should not be fed to dogs. The smell test is your best indicator. Chicken that has gone off contains bacteria such as Salmonella and Campylobacter that can cause vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy in dogs. The fact that dogs sometimes eat things off the ground doesn’t mean they are immune — it just means they sometimes get away with it. If in doubt, throw it out.

Can Dogs Eat Expired Chicken? (Past the Best By Date)

“Best by” dates on raw chicken indicate peak freshness, not a hard safety cutoff. Raw chicken that is 1–2 days past its best by date, has been properly refrigerated, and smells normal is usually safe to cook and feed to your dog. However, if the chicken is more than 2–3 days past its best by date, or if it smells off or feels unusually slimy, discard it. Cooking kills many bacteria but does not eliminate all toxins produced by bacteria that has already multiplied in the meat.

Can Dogs Eat Out of Date Chicken If It Is Cooked?

Cooking chicken that is slightly past its date kills most bacteria including Salmonella. If the chicken is only marginally past its best by date, still smells relatively normal, and you cook it thoroughly to an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C), it is generally safe for your dog. Do not cook and feed chicken that smells strongly off, has visible discoloration beyond slight dullness, or has been sitting in liquid at the bottom of the fridge. The risk increases significantly once those signs appear.

Can Dogs Eat Week Old Cooked Chicken?

Cooked chicken that has been in the refrigerator for a full week is past the recommended safe window for both dogs and humans. The USDA recommends consuming cooked chicken within 3–4 days of refrigeration. At 7 days, bacterial growth is a real concern even if no mold is visible. If you have cooked chicken you won’t use within 4 days, freeze it. Frozen cooked chicken lasts 2–4 months and thaws safely overnight in the refrigerator.

Can Dogs Eat Expired Meat?

The same principles that apply to chicken apply to other meats — beef, pork, turkey and lamb. Meat that is slightly past its best by date but properly stored, smelling normal, and cooked thoroughly carries a low risk. Meat that is visibly off, slimy, or smells strongly should be discarded regardless. Raw expired meat carries a higher risk than cooked, because cooking kills bacteria that would otherwise have continued to multiply.

Raw Chicken and Raw Diets

If your dog eats a raw diet, chicken should always be fresh, properly handled, and consumed immediately or stored frozen. Never feed raw chicken that has been sitting out, is more than a day past its best by date, or smells off in any way. Raw chicken carries a higher baseline bacterial load than cooked chicken and the margin for error is much narrower.

Signs Your Dog Ate Bad Chicken

Watch for these symptoms in the 6–24 hours after your dog eats old or off chicken:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy or unusual tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Excessive drooling

Mild symptoms often resolve on their own with rest and fresh water. If symptoms are severe, persist beyond 24 hours, or include blood in the stool, contact your veterinarian.
